Collections

OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION

The Calhoun-Gordon County Library houses over 90,000 items with easy access through intralibrary loan to the collections at the branches, Dalton and Murray. The entire system consists of approximately 272,000 items.

ADULT COLLECTION

Adult Fiction

The entire fiction collection is located in the northeast corner of the library. It is separated into a new books area, a section for large print books and general collection. New books stay in their specific area for approximately 6 months prior to being moved to the general collection. There is a 2 week loan period for all books, with the availability of renewal if needed. Fiction is not separated by genre, but identified by applicable stickers on their spines. Some basic categories one would find are: western, science fiction, mysteries, español and various holidays.



Adult Non-fiction

The non-fiction collection consists of a substantial reference collection which can be used in house only. In addition there is a general collection which may be checked out. The books are organized by the Dewey Decimal system.



Local history / Genealogy

The CGCL Genealogy Room is open to the public during regular business hours. The resources available include two Microfilm readers equipped with printers, a genealogy computer for searching online databases, and countless volumes of genealogical records on the shelves. This non-circulating collection is located in its own room to the right of the entrance of the library.



Español

Adult Spanish materials, fiction and non-fiction, are shelved adjacent to the reading area. The children and young adult Spanish material are located in the children’s department to the right of the juvenile fiction collection.

Periodicals

Magazines and newspapers are located adjacent to the reading area.



NON-PRINT

Video Cassettes and DVDs

The VHS/DVD collection includes genres including popular television shows, cooking instruction, self-help and classics. They are located behind the adult reading area. Videos may be checked out for 7 days.



Audio Collection

Located in front of the video collection, the audio section consists of adult fiction and non-fiction. There is a designated section for current bestsellers. Loan period is 2 weeks, with a maximum of 6 audio available for check out at one time.



CD music

A variety of CDs are available for checkout. The collection is adjacent to the audio section of the library.

Other Formats

Microfilm

The microfilm collection is housed in the file cabinets of the Genealogy Room. There are back issues of the local paper, The Calhoun Times, and census records of Georgia counties. There are 2 microfilm readers located in The Genealogy Room. This is a non-circulating collection.



YOUNG ADULT COLLECTION

Geared toward ages 13-18, this collection is housed in The Young Adult Library Corner, to the far left of the circulation desk. Included in this collection are both fiction and non-fiction books. A large section holds the new books and graphic novels. Comfortable seating is available for teens to read and study.



CHILDREN’S COLLECTION

The children’s department is located to the left of the circulation desk. The collection consists of easy readers, beginning readers, Caldecott and Newberry award -winning books, audio books, children’s videos, and juvenile fiction and non-fiction.



Parent/Teacher Collection

Housed in the adult non-fiction department, this collection has instructional materials for teachers and parents who provide homeschooling.

Adult Literacy Collection

Tutors and students may draw upon all of the materials in every part of the library which may aid in the development of basic reading, writing, computational, and other functional literacy skills. Materials in the collection cover grammar, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and math. Pre-GED and GED materials may be found in the larger nonfiction collection for more advanced students.
